The Acura RDX 2021 is known for its reliability and resale value, while the Volvo XC40 2021 is known for its safety. Both offer sporty handling. This is how they compare.
2021 Acura RDX
Above average: Brand reliability and resale value; plenty of standard equipment; reasonable pricing; spacious cabin; Top security values.
Below average: It lacks some of the prestige of other competitors in this segment; no sports model; lean tow package of 1,500 pounds.
Consensus: The Acura RDX 2021 might not be the most eye-catching premium compact SUV at the party, but one that guarantees a good time. Buy the RDX for parent Honda’s reputation for reliability and resale value, and in fact, you’ll be constantly reminded that you made an excellent choice.
2021 Volvo XC40
Above average: Distinctive style; advanced security; generous standard equipment; available AWD and EV.
Below average: Ccomplicated touchscreen scheme; annoying shift lever design; no hybrid option.
Consensus: Good looks, size, and features within easy reach of young wealthy buyers, this R-seater is sure to swoon some buyers. A foreign model range, generous standard equipment, a long list of desirable options and available drive trains set it apart. The XC40’s superb driving experience helps solidify its position.
RDX vs. XC40: Small miracles
The Acura RDX is a well built luxury compact SUV with a luxurious interior with the latest in technology and style. The 2.0-liter turbo in-line 4 is the only engine on offer, but it puts out 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, which happens to be more than any of its German competitors. This power is transferred to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission and either the standard FWD or the award-winning Super Handling all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) from Acura.
Inside, the Acura RDX includes such features and technology as push-button gear shifters that take a few seconds to get used to but quickly become second nature. The RDX features include an ultra-wide panoramic sunroof, an electric tailgate with height adjustment, 19-inch alloy wheels and a two-zone automatic climate control. The available RDX technology package includes blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic warning, front / rear parking sensors, navigation with real-time traffic updates, GPS-linked air conditioning, leather upholstery and a highly rated ELS 12-speaker audio system.
The XC40 offers two 2.0-liter turbo in-line 4 engines. The front-wheel drive version of the XC40 T4 offers 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. If AWD is on your “must-have” list, the XC40 T5 is your candidate with its upgraded 2.0-liter turbo engine with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The P8 Recharge EV version offers 208 miles of range. The XC40’s bold, edgy look may not be the right choice for all buyers, but it’s up to us. The stylistic “Thor’s Hammer” headlights are here, leading to a crisp fold on the hood that ends with a nicely shaped tailgate.
The names of the trim levels “Momentum”, “Inscription” and “R-Design” are a bite, but offer their own distinctive hints. The basic equipment of the XC40 Momentum is well equipped and includes electrically adjustable driver seats, leather upholstery, an electric tailgate and a digital 12.3-inch driver display. A 9-inch tablet-style display helps to operate the infotainment system, including an audio system with 8 speakers / 250 watts and smartphone integration from Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. An available Harman / Kardon audio system is available for the audiophile buyer.
Available all-wheel drive; luxurious and tech-filled interiors; satisfactory performance from both vehicles.
