Chinese supreme lawmaker emphasizes ecological protection on global forum


GUIYANG, July 12 (Xinhuanet) – China attaches great importance to environmental protection, and its environmental protection has gone through a historic turning point, China’s top lawmaker Li Zhanshu said Monday.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, made the remarks as he spoke at the opening of the Eco Forum 2021 annual global conference in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

China has made resource conservation and environmental protection a fundamental state policy and sustainable development a national strategy, Li said, adding that the country’s environmental protection has undergone a historic turning point with far-reaching implications.

Li reiterated China’s pledges to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060, saying the country will help meet global climate and environmental challenges and ensure global ecological security.

To keep the promise, Li emphasized efforts to raise environmental awareness, accelerate green and low-carbon development, strengthen pollution prevention and control, improve the legal system, and promote international exchanges and cooperation.

Foreign heads of state and government, including the Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and the Tongan Prime Minister Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, spoke via video link at the conference on the topic of “Green and low-carbon development, promoting a living community for people and nature”.
