China sees historic changes in the eco-environment: white paper

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) – China has seen historic changes in its ecological environment, according to a white paper on moderate prosperity released Tuesday by the State Council Information Bureau.

A healthy ecological environment is the most important contributor to human wellbeing and is in every way a salient feature of moderate prosperity, states the white paper entitled “China’s Epic Journey from Poverty to Prosperity”.

According to the White Paper, China has made great strides in pollution prevention and control, and has made great strides in keeping the skies blue, the water clear, and the land pollution free by 2020.

In cities at or above the prefecture level, 87 percent of the days achieved good or excellent air quality. Up to 94.5 percent of drinking water sources for urban communities met the required standards. About 90 percent of the polluted farmland and more than 93 percent of the polluted land has been made safe for use, the white paper says.

The country has the highest growth in forest resources and the largest area of artificial forests in the world, the White Paper says. By the end of 2020, it had increased its proportion of forest to 23 percent of its land mass and the proportion of vegetation in its grassland to 56.1 percent.

China is also a world leader in terms of new energy uses and advances in energy saving. Between 2015 and 2020, energy consumption per unit of GDP fell by 13.2 percent and CO2 emissions by 18.8 percent, she added.

By passing the strictest environmental protection law in its history and formulating or amending a number of other laws and regulations, the country has created a legal framework for the ecological environment that covers all environmental factors in key areas, the white paper says.
