Thanks to Squid game, the brutally entertaining Netflix series that is currently haunting the country, the wildly trending Dalgona sweets are now officially on the Houston branch of MDK Noodles.
For those who haven’t seen the series, the Dalgona Caramelized Sugar Sweets are in an episode of. prominently represented Squid game, a Korean television show in which contestants take part in a series of kids’ games that look deceptively simple, for a chance at a huge cash prize. Fortunately, however, at MDK nobody has to compete in a terrifying game to get their hands on this airy, crunchy candy.
Also called ppopgi or honeycomb candy, sugar is heated until it is caramelized and fluffy, then poured out, pressed into a circle, and then given a simple shape like a heart. As on the TV show, Dalgona candy fans are obsessed with carving the shape neatly out of the circle, though they don’t really face certain death if they fail. There are thousands of videos of recipes for making your own Dalgona candy on TikTok, but it definitely seems easier to leave the hot, sticky sugar handling to the professionals.
Via the restaurant’s Instagram account, see how MDK Noodle makes Dalgona candy using a process identical to that used on the show:
Dalgona candy is currently available for purchase at the MDK Noodle location in Asiatown. It is not yet known how long the devilishly yummy candy will stay, so fans of the show will definitely want their fix sooner rather than later.
MDK Noodle is located at 9798 Bellaire Blvd Suite F in Asiatown.
