198 professionals sign a letter in support of the vaccine

Another 96 medical professionals have now signed a letter in support of the Covid-19 vaccine, with the open letter now having nearly 200 signatories.

A spokesman said: “Another 96 medical professionals have now signed a letter in support of the Covid-19 vaccine. The open letter, which was published for the first time on September 23, now has almost 200 signatures, and the number is rising. The island’s doctors are also working together to answer some frequently asked questions in a new series designed to encourage a healthy conversation about vaccinations.

“This comes after the Bermuda Medical Doctors Association [BMDA] conducted a poll in August that found 95.77% of the island’s doctors would recommend the Pfizer [or Moderna] mRNA Covid-19 vaccine for a healthy adult without contraindications.

Dr. Wilbert Warner, an internal medicine physician, says, “There was an unfortunate assumption that those who hadn’t signed the letter were somehow against vaccinations, which just isn’t the case. Some have not had the opportunity to do so, and the list of doctors in the Bermuda Register includes many who no longer work here, who now live abroad, visit specialists, or are retired doctors. “

Dr. Fiona Ross, local GP, added: “As a doctor, you are portrayed as either / or. You are a slave to science just looking to get vaccinated, or you are a holistic naturopath when the reality is that the majority of us practice holism. We need to have a conversation about how they meet. “

“Doctors see the same questions on topical issues like boosting natural immunity, ivermectin as a treatment, fertility concerns and the effect of the vaccine on breastfed babies,” a spokesman said.

“So far, the conversation about the fight against Covid-19 has been largely conducted by the government and we saw this as an opportunity to share the public’s fears and concerns. Hesitation is natural, especially when it comes to something unknown, and it is important to take government out of the equation because there is so much suspicion among people everywhere. This is not just specific to Bermuda.

“I don’t want anyone to feel compelled to get vaccinated. As a doctor, I want you to ask questions; I want you to speak to me; I want you to share your concerns with me; And I want you to know the benefits. People just want to know that they are safe and when they are afraid of the vaccine which is really strong. Offering statistics that go back to March 2020 doesn’t help everyone. These are people’s beliefs. If you respect that, it will be easier to have a conversation. “

Dr. Louise White, local GP, adds that there are so many options like calling your GP’s office or visiting the Department of Health’s pop-up clinics over the weekend at The Hamilton Princess.

“All of the research and data has been a huge learning curve for us too,” added Dr. White added. “More than six and a half billion doses of the vaccine have been given worldwide. We have now brought out all of this evidence that emphatically shows that it is much safer to get vaccinated against Covid-19 than to catch it without vaccination.

“Doctors still agree that the vaccine is our number one chance to beat the virus,” a spokesman said.

“For all of us, vaccinated or not, it is not a question of whether we will be exposed to Covid-19, but when. Risking catching Covid if you haven’t been vaccinated is like Russian roulette. It’s like putting everything you have on red – and it comes out black. When it comes to Covid-19 we know the older population is worse off, we know diabetics and comorbidities are worse off, but we don’t know why some fit and healthy 40 year olds die while others get away with one sniff. We really don’t know. We know that this is mostly avoidable. We had to deal with the horror of the first wave, but now it’s avoidable.

Dr. Warner added, “I think it’s great that the Bermuda doctors are standing up and saying we believe that.”
