Although the results don’t reflect the reality of where we’re typically exposed to multiple streams of information, images, and tweets, we’d still see and process how many followers a Twitter account has, says Tessitore, so it’s probably the same. Effect.
But right now we’re still a long way from encouraging people to eat healthier diets with posts about salads and distracting people from the powerful images of leaking protein.
“We are fighting against years of evolution here,” says Pancer. “There’s a reason we evolved to look for high-calorie foods in food-scarce environments. But eating what feels good goes wrong – we have to find ways to recalibrate it now. “
During his research, Pancer found that the feel-good effect disappears as soon as we demystify why seeing photos of burgers and fries feels good. In other words, if we understand that we are biologically programmed to make us feel good looking at burger photos, we may be less prone to being influenced by them.
In one study, he and his team asked participants to watch one of two videos, one with low-calorie and one with high-calorie food. Those who saw higher calorie foods felt more positive afterwards.
In the second part of the study, he told participants that their feelings were not based on the food they would see, but on a low-frequency, mood-enhancing sound played that was imperceptible to humans, while a second group had no impact would have.
Those told the sound no longer said they would engage with the video on social media after seeing the high-calorie food video.
But ultimately, when we leave social media and return to real life, the many influences on what and how we eat are still much stronger, experts say.
“I assume that food cues are stronger personally,” says Argeseanu. “We don’t keep ourselves busy in the same way when we scroll through photos, and we don’t keep ourselves busy for long. Also, some research shows that as we scroll through a lot of photos, we start to fade them out – we start to feel what feels like satiety, like we’ve eaten them all. “
At least if you just want to enjoy these festivals via Instagram, there is no need to loosen your belt.
