Penang State Tourism launched its Experience Penang campaign to attract local and international visitors to its shores. The displays are shown on the LED screen panels from Cosmic Towers at the intersection of KL Sentral-NU Sentral and the Giant Cube in front of the Lot 10 shopping center. These locations were chosen because of KL’s downtown reputation as the main tourist hub in the country and to maximize the campaign’s efforts to attract domestic and international tourists to Penang.
The displays remind visitors of the state’s attractions, from the two UNESCO-recognized sites, the UNESCO-listed George Town and the recently recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Penang Hill, quirky street art, legendary street food, 130 million year old pristine rainforest and diverse Natural landscapes with hills and beaches.
At the same time, in addition to the OOH advertisements, brochures with topics such as “Other side of the island, Teluk Bahang and Balik Pulau” and “Opposite side of the island, Seberang Perai” were launched. All of this is in line with Penang’s ambition to become a premier, sustainable and diverse tourism destination as outlined in the Penang Tourism Masterplan and Penang2030 vision to create a variety of high quality tourism products across the island and mainland.
The campaign also features promotions and deals on the campaign website, including the best hotels, attractions, tour packages, Penang products, takeaway or delivery deals, and wedding deals. Experience Penang on e-commerce platforms like Klook and Shopee with ongoing promotions until the end of the year.
Yeoh Soon Hin, EXCO for Tourism and Creative Industries (PETACE) for Penang State, said the campaign was an important step for the state to rebuild tourism by attracting more local tourists to visit Penang. “A recent survey by an online travel booking platform found that Malaysians are still interested in popular domestic tourist attractions and that Penang is among the top five most booked destinations,” he said.
Although Penang remains a popular tourist destination, Yeoh said the state needs to keep improving and developing new tourism products for visitors to see and explore so they can spend more days in Penang. A + M reached out to Penang State Tourism for additional information on the campaign.
