Klur Founder Lesley Thornton on why effective skincare needs to be holistic

When we think of beauty routines, we often simply think of products that we put on our skin. In reality, skin health depends on much more than the right topical cream—it’s rooted in our body’s overall health. Holistic beautician CLEAR Founder Lesley Thornton understands this connection between health and beauty and takes a holistic approach rooted in science to design the products her company offers. The result is a clean skincare line that’s sustainably and ethically made, with a flair for creative ingredients that goes beyond the typical list found in most mainstream products. Simultaneously luxurious and practical, KLUR skincare offerings encourage self-care at the deepest level. Here’s what Thornton shared about why effective skincare should be holistic, and how KLUR helps achieve that goal.

Olivia O’Bryon: What Is Holistic Skincare And Why Is It Important?

Lesley Thornton: Treating your skin holistically means taking a purposeful multidimensional approach to your lifestyle, activities and habits that supports the skin’s inner and outer health. It goes beyond treating skin symptoms with isolated skin care products as it helps to find the true cause of skin problems, which in many cases are linked to systemic imbalances. In a modern world, it is extremely important to adopt a lifestyle structure that supports our entire physical well-being, not just a part of our life or body parts. There is beauty in our wholeness and that makes us feel more complete.

OO: What should be considered when establishing a truly holistic skincare routine?

LT: Establishing a holistic routine is not only meant to beautify your skin, but to effectively improve your overall mental and physical health. These steps also help boost your immune system, increase energy levels, and improve your mind-body connection, promoting optimal well-being:

Skin Care Products: Create a considered, supportive skin care routine based on your specific needs. Overall, products should be gentle and respect the skin barrier, regardless of your skin type and concerns.

Diet: Eat to promote good gut health. Your diet and gut health directly impact skin inflammation, hydration and resilience.

Move your body: As your heart rate increases, your blood vessels begin to dilate, carrying more blood — carrying oxygen and nutrients — to your skin. Exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital.

Sleep well: The effects of poor sleep quickly show on your skin. Melatonin and human growth hormone (HGH) are your skin’s greatest natural allies during sleep. Both rise while we sleep, and raising them is critical for optimal skin repair.

Reduce Stress: Managing stress and anxiety is vital for healthy skin, as an imbalanced nervous system directly affects barrier function, accelerating the rate of aging and slowing down healing.

OO: How has your knowledge of holistic skincare influenced KLUR’s products?

LT: Based on the knowledge gained from my many years of training, I have developed a holistic formulation process that is based on optimal skin compatibility. Each formula begins with this comprehensive and inclusive framework, built on commonalities found in human skin. My entire process focuses on meeting the necessary requirements for healthy skin, catering to all skin types, ethnicities and conditions, with an emphasis on multitasking formulas that deliver long-lasting results. My goal with every formula is to create the best and most consistent product experience possible. I’m not interested in the latest or greatest ingredient trends. From day one I have prioritized botanical ingredients, particularly those with strong skin tolerances that promote skin health and are easily accessible and readily available. Due to my background, I am very interested in high-performance products, which means my process needs to be as creative as it is data-driven.

OO: What KLUR product are you looking forward to the most right now?

LT: I’m still very excited Sculpture+A which we launched last spring – it is our first well-aging treatment in a cream. After years of formulating skincare products, I have never been more excited to add a product to our collection. There was so much research that went into this formula and a significant portion of the botanical ingredients are supported by clinical data which is extremely important to my formulation process. I think consumers really appreciate our commitment to skin health and science-based formulas.

OO: How does KLUR help lead in holistic beauty?

LT: When I first started building Klur, there weren’t any professional skincare brands that integrated wholeness with beauty, and the beauty landscape was largely reductionist; based solely on individual product launches and how they can improve the way we look. A holistic approach to one’s beauty offers a depth not seen on the mainstream market but has long been practiced by estheticians and beauty practitioners.

At Klur we believe beauty is much more than a product and our true power lies in our daily routine. When we align our lifestyles with holistic protocols and consider our skin as an organ and communicator connected to billions of nerves; it becomes an extension of our overall health. My goal is not just to bring beautiful things into the world, but to lead our community to a new way of thinking about the connections between beauty, the planet and optimal wellbeing. The tools of holistic beauty have the power to reshape our lives and the potential to reset the relationship with the mind-body connection.
