Penang, August 26, 2022 – Firefly, an airline of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), has resumed passenger flights from Penang (PEN) to Phuket (HKT) with its newly refreshed Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Flight FY3600 departed from Penang for Phuket and landed at 2:20 p.m. local time with 134 passengers. The airline will fly four times a week from Penang (PEN) to Phuket (HKT) and vice versa. The resumption marked the second international destination for Firefly after Seletar in Singapore last June.

Philip See, Chief Executive Officer of Firefly, said: “As global travel restrictions, particularly in ASEAN countries, are lifted, customers are excited and looking forward to stress-free leisure travel. The launch of our new Boeing 737-800 jets earlier this year will drive more traffic and fly more passengers to different destinations, connecting them between cities and popular holiday destinations like Phuket.

The resumption of service from Penang is conveniently timed to coincide with the lunchtime time in Phuket to give customers ample time to check into their accommodation. Customers traveling to Phuket will enjoy delicious food and drink, participate in handicrafts, watch street performances, stroll along the beach and much more. In contrast, those who travel to Penang can explore the riches of Penang through historic colonial architecture, beautiful beaches, some of the world’s best street food and much more.”

Tourism Authority of Thailand, Kuala Lumpur Office Ms. Nongyao Jirundorn said, “It’s great to see that Malaysian travelers from Penang consider Thailand as a preferred travel destination and are ready to explore Phuket comfortably with Firefly’s direct flight. Penang and Phuket share similarities in history and culture. Malaysian tourists will feel like they are at home from home while enjoying the unique cuisines of southern Phuket and the beautiful beaches. This year, 890,000 tourists from all over the world will come to Phuket. Thailand also welcomed 560,000 Malaysian tourists from January to August this year.” Tourism Authority of Thailand, Phuket Office Ms. Nantasiri Ranasiri added: “Phuket has a lot to offer, it is home to fantastic beaches. Tourists can enjoy Phuket’s gastronomy, with a variety of foods ranging from Michelin restaurants to local street food. There are also many quality hotels and resorts with safe and hygienic practices to welcome all Malaysians.

Penang Global Tourism Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ooi Chok Yan added: “We look forward to continuing to increase tourist arrivals while connecting Penangites and the northern community to more international-scale destinations with the Firefly network. Penang has much more to offer than just quiet beachside retreats. Also known as the Pearl of the Orient, Penang is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage City, thereby presenting to the world its quaint old buildings, history, art and culture coexisting with modern development as well as the newly recognized Penang Hill UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.” Last April, Firefly resumed flying Boeing 737-800 to several destinations such as Langkawi, Johor Bharu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. With this resumption, Kota Kinabalu customers now have a better opportunity to travel more cheaply and conveniently between the city and the ASEAN region. Customers flying our Boeing 737-800 jets can customize their trip with value package offers from Plus, Extra or Flex. It includes a 20kg baggage allowance, hot in-flight meals, two transfers, enrich points, priority baggage, boarding & check-in, seat selection, travel insurance and much more.

Firefly strives to offer its customers seamless service, flexibility and further savings by offering great deals, flexibility and better connections between cities so customers can fly together conveniently and cheaply. Firefly aims to connect passengers within regions, offering more choice and seamless service on every journey.
